In an ideal situation, our lungs oxygenate the blood that circulates through the body. They also eliminate carbon dioxide and other waste particulates.
If our respiratory system isn't working correctly, adverse effects might show up on your skin.
How do I know if the air I'm breathing causes my acne?
While it's hard to know for sure if the air you breathe is causing your acne, here are a few questions that you can use to narrow it down:
- Is there smog in your environment (work or home)?
- Have you moved to a new area recently?
- Do you experience breakouts on and off despite the time of the month?
- Do you have chronic congestion, sinus problems, asthma, or other lung-related issues?
How does toxicity from the air enter the body?
When we breathe in, the air passes through a series of tubes (bronchioles) lined with the body's toxin elimination agents. These tubes get smaller until they end in air sacs (alveoli) that supply the blood with clean air.
If something interferes with the lungs' ability to remove toxic agents, these could reach the bloodstream.
When toxic substances get into our bloodstream from the lungs, the body transports those chemicals to other elimination systems through the blood.
What relationship does the air have with acne?
Our bodies push out these impurities through the skin. The waste in our bloodstream reaches the skin via the capillaries. When the impurities arrive at the capillary beds, the skin's immunity cells engulf and remove them.
Externally
Your skin surface is in contact with the air. Therefore, if there are impurities in the air, they settle your skin and cause adverse reactions. This is because the skin is fighting the toxins internally and externally to ensure they don't harm you.
How can my skin heal?
Since the impurities travel from the lungs to the blood and then to the skin, you need a multi-faceted approach.
1—CLEAN THE AIR AROUND YOU
There are several ways you can do this. You could have indoor plants in your home or office, spend time in the forest regularly, and use an air filter for your bedroom, living room, and workspace. Alternatively, boil some water and steep some herbs or add a few drops of essential oils like eucalyptus, mint, and thyme. Use the steam to refresh the indoor air.
2—CLEAN YOUR BLOOD
Your kidneys and liver clean the blood, so strengthening these organs will improve your overall health as well as mitigate acne. Drink enough water, replenish your electrolytes, and eat bitter herbs to enhance your digestive system's health.
Remember also to maintain a healthy, plant-based diet full of leafy greens and fresh fruit and get 7.5 – 9 hours of sleep daily.
