Organic skincare from the Italian countryside
Knowing your skin type is the first step towards achieving a radiant, healthy complexion. However, many people struggle to identify their skin type accurately, leading to ineffective skincare routines...
Fear not! In this blog post, we'll guide you through three straightforward steps to uncover your true skin type and debunk common mistakes along the way.
Fully cleanse your face and wait at least 1 hour.
Blot one section of your face at a time:
Cheeks
Forehead, nose, and chin (T-zone)
After blotting the cheeks, examine the tissue. Then after blotting the forehead, nose, and chin, examine the tissue.
Now it's time to determine if you have a dry, oily, combination, or normal skin type:
Dry Skin Type: If the tissue shows little to no oil absorption, and your skin feels tight, you likely have a dry skin type. Your skin may also feel rough and have flakey areas.
Normal Skin Type: If the tissue shows little to no oil absorption, and your skin feels comfortable, you likely have a normal skin type.
Oily Skin Type: If the tissue absorbs oil across your entire face, you likely have an oily skin type. You will also likely notice larger, visible pores and a shiny reflection across your face.
Combination Skin Type: If the tissue shows no oil absorption in the cheek area and at least a moderate amount of oil absorption in on your t-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), you likely have a combination skin type. You will also likely notice larger, visible pores and a shiny reflection in the t-zone. Outside of this zone you may have dry or normal skin.
In addition to the skin types above (related to oil production), if your skin is easily irritated, red, or prone to rashes, you may also have sensitive skin.
While these steps can provide valuable insights, it's essential to avoid common mistakes that can lead to misidentifying your skin type:
Trust the blot test over appearance: Just because your skin looks shiny doesn't necessarily mean it's oily. For example, dehydration can also cause a shiny appearance.
Consider external factors: Factors like humidity, hormonal changes, pollution, new products, and more can temporarily affect your skin's oil production, leading to inaccurate assessments. Consider if your skin has been exposed any new factors recently.
Don't judge immediately after cleansing: Remember to wait at least wait one hour!
Remember, your skin type can change over time. Regularly reassessing your skin can help you adjust your skincare routine accordingly and maintain a healthy, radiant complexion.
The sebaceous glands in dry skin don't produce enough sebum, leading to dryness and dehydration.
This skin type is prone to dullness, tightness, and poor function, if not properly hydrated and nourished.

This skin type produces just the right amount of sebum (oil) to keep it looking fresh and healthy. It is not prone to excessive dryness or oiliness and generally has a healthy feel and appearance.

This skin type has overactive sebaceous glands that produce too much sebum. Be careful of clogged pores and breakouts if not properly managed.
See Sole Toscana's recommended routine for oily skin types.
The sebaceous glands in this skin type produce varying amounts of oil in different facial areas.
This skin type requires a customized approach, addressing the needs of both oily and dry areas.

While sensitivity is not directly related to oil production, sensitive skin often has an impaired barrier function, making it more reactive to ingredients and environmental factors.
This skin type requires gentle products and careful ingredient selection to avoid further irritation or adverse reactions.
We highly recommend starting with EU-certified organic skincare products, along with determining any specific ingredients that irritate your skin.
Many customers with sensitive skin love Sole Toscana's organic skincare set, certified by the 3rd party, Natrue.
